Baby bath time and skin care

For bath time I always brew a strong cup of camomile tea to add to baby’s bathwater (two camomile tea bags or two heaped teaspoons of dried camomile flowers steeped for 15 minutes to 2 hours in a cup of boiling water). This is excellent in soothing any skin irritations like insect bites, nail scratches, or nappy rashes. As babies like drinking and slurping their bath water, it is also very good for their digestive system. Our little one loves playing hide and seek with a face washer or watching the water dribble down when she holds it up. She loves to suck the tea bath water through her face washer and play with her rubber ducky in a bath of golden camomile.
At the end of a bath every day, baby gets dried up and massaged with cold pressed organically grown Coconut Oil – babies grow rapidly and this prevents the skin from drying out. For very cold and dry weather when the skin dries out faster (and can leave dry flaky skin on the little one’s arms, legs, or cheeks) I rub the affected areas with Anhydrous Lanoline (pure wool fat). People always comment on her nice skin and these bathing and skin care methods seem to work J.

  1. I never thought of adding herbal tea to bathtime! I did for myself postpartum, but never for my kids on their own. What a great idea. You're totally right that kids drink the bathwater; I like the thought that it could be something healthful for them.

  5. I'm familiar with the soothing affects of chamomile for teething. Adding it to bath water is a wonderful extension of the same idea. I'll have to try it soon!

I'm definitely going to try the chamomile tea bath, Jesse also loves to drink his bath water, but because our water is so laden with chemicals - we don't normally drink it - I have taught him how to spit it out recently, which works well, except when he is drinking water in the car for instance, Lol. I love coconut oil too :)

  10. Town/city water just tastes bad, I have a water purifier to make is stomachable. At my mum and dads, they have rain water and it sure tastes good. Oh that poor car of yours! (that's really quite amusing :)

  11. All of your methods sound great, but I love the chamomile tea bath idea! I often put a few drops of lavender in my daughter's bath at night to help with calming and winding down for bedtime, but we're almost out of lavender essential oil and this sounds like a lovely change that would soothe the skin as well! I'm going to give it a try :)

  13. ooh - this sounds wonderful! wil definitely have to give it a try. dd loves drinking hot tea; i'm sure she'd love the treat of it in her bath! :) We use a tummy tub for our newborn, it's only about a gallon of water. do you think we could pour tea in there? would you use less for a newborn in a tiny amount of water?

    1. Yes, definitely great to use even for a tummy tub. I would put only one tea bag or spoon of dried flowers for a small amount of water, with tea steeped for a short duration for less or a longer duration for stronger brew. When mine was a newborn I did a spoon per 10 litre bucket (1 gallon = 3.8 litres), but if she had a rash or skin irritation would make a stronger tea. Start small and increase as you feel comfortable :)

  14. Babies skin are very soft and sensitive so their bathing must be hygienic and special,parents should buy good quality bath tub, soap, shampoo etc.

  16. It would be best if you use hot water during winter season. For new born babies ensure that to bath them with proper care. Always keep towel and cover near by you as soon as bathing is over. You can take the help of doctor for taking liquid soap.

  25. On the other hand, why give a practical gift? Isn’t this a time to celebrate, to go all out, to get the parents and baby something truly spectacular? You could, instead, have the great idea that this newborn baby gift could be an opportunity to give them something that is less generic and more specially thought out for them.

  27. This is a great post! I love the idea of adding camomile tea to bathwater because babies enjoy sipping the water and this way they will get a digestive boost as well. I do have a question on this though: once soap has gotten into the water, isn't it dangerous for a baby to drink the water (even in small doses)? Won't adding the camomile tea make the baby more inclined to drink the soapy water too?
